The Max XL is the smallest fryer we would put in front of a family of four, and the reason it qualifies is a published number rather than a marketing one: Ninja rates the basket at three pounds of fries, which is a real batch for four people rather than a hopeful one.
Its Max Crisp setting reaches 450°F, matching the Cosori and beating the Instant by 50 degrees. That ceiling is most useful on frozen food, where the difference between 400 and 450 is the difference between heated and crisp. Seven functions and a dishwasher-safe ceramic-coated basket cover the rest.
Buy it for the footprint, not the capacity. At 5.5 quarts you are at the bottom of the family range with nothing spare, so if you regularly cook for more than four or want to batch ahead, the six-quart picks above are the better call. If counter space is the binding constraint, this is the one that fits.
